Bengaluru formerly known as Bangalore is amegacity in the South Eastern part of India and also the capital of Karnataka. Bengaluru is the 5th most populous urban center in India and the third most populous city in the country. Bengaluru is referred to as the Silicon Valley of India as it is India’s leading hub for Information Technology. Kannada film industry has its headquarters situated in Bangalore. Bangalore ranks 4th when it comes to the contribution of a city to India’s GDP.
History of the city
The region of Bangalore was ruled by many South Indian empires from fourth to the tenth century. Bangalore specifically was controlled by the western Ganga dynasty. After western Ganga dynasty, it was Rashtrakutas who ruled the city up to 10th century. After the Rashtrakutas, it was Cholas who ascended the throne. In 1343, the strong empire of the south, the Vijaynagar Empire annexed the region and made it an important part of their empire. After a long term in power, Vijayanagar Empire fell because of the frequent invasions Adil Shah. The last Mughal emperor Aurangzeb defeated Ekoji I, the ruler of Bangalore and sold the city to Chikkadevaraja Wodeyar for 3 lakh rupees. After the tragic death of wodeyar, Hyder Ali became the de facto ruler of the region. The kingdom, later on, was passed on to Tipu Sultan, son of Hyder Ali. Lord Cornwallis, a high-ranking official of the East India Company defeated Tipu sultan after the fourth Anglo-Mysore war of 1799 and annexed the state of Mysore. After India got independence in 1947, Bengaluru became the part of the newly carved out state of Mysore.
Geographical location of Bengaluru
Bengaluru is situated on the Mysore plateau in the southeast part of Indian state of Karnataka. Bengaluru lies 900 meters above the sea level. The topography of Bangalore region is flat and a bit hilly on the western part of the city. Bengaluru has a red Laterite loamy and clayey soil, which is perfect for the cultivation of deciduous canopy and coconut trees. There are numerous freshwater lakes in Bengaluru which includes Hebbal, Ulsoor, and Yediyur Lake.

According to 2011 census, the population of Bangalore was estimated to be 8.5 million. Bangalore is the second growing metropolis area after New Delhi. Hinduism is the major religion in the city with more than 80 percent of the population adhering to the faith. Other religions practiced in the city are Islam, Christianity and Jainism. Kannada is the native language of Bangalore. Other languages including Urdu, Hindi, Tamil, English, and Telugu are also widely spoken in the region. Bengaluru is famous for its beautiful gardens and fondly referred to as “Garden city of India”.
Bengaluru’s cuisine is quite famous all over India, there are numerous variety of foods like South Indian, North Indian, Chinese, and Western that are very popular in the city. Some of the other famous cuisines of Bengaluru are Bisi bele bhath, Rava idli, Pongal, and spicy Uppittu which is also known as Khara Bath.

Bengaluru has a whopping 523 billion economy with an outstanding economic growth of 10.3 percent. Bengaluru hosts the fourth largest fast moving consumer goods market. The city tops in having individuals with high net worth. Bangalore’s economy prowess is mainly due to huge contributions from the IT and Biotechnology sectors.

Rapid Metro Transit System (from Malleswaram to Chikballapur)
A rapid transit system named Namma Metro is established in the Bengaluru city. A 7 km stretch starting from Byappanahalli and ending at MG Road was opened for public on 20th October 2011. Another 10 km track was laid from Malleswaram to the locality of Peenya was opened on 1st March 2014. After completion, this will be a 42.3 km elevated and underground rail stretch includ 41 stations.
