Cuttack is an important city in the state of Odisha. It is known as ‘The Silver City’ and ‘The Millennium City’. The name Cuttack is derived from Sanskrit word ‘Kataka’ which means a fort or a military camp. The city is said to be the commercial capital of the state.
Cuttack was founded by the Keshari Dynasty in 989 AD. It went under the ruling of Hindu king Mukunda Dev, Mughals and Marathas. Under the Maratha rule by 1750, Cuttack flourished greatly as a business center. In the 19th century, it was captured by British and declared as the capital of Orissa. Cuttack is the motherland of several great personalities, such as Madhusudhan Das, Subhash Chandra Bose, Biju Patnayak, Akshaya Mohanty and Nityananda Palit.
The geo coordinates of Cuttack are 20.4625° North latitude and 85.8830° East longitude. The average elevation is 36 meters above sea level. Cuttack is spread across an area of 192.5 km2. It is located at the apex of Mahanadi delta.
The climate of Cuttack is tropical. The average annual temperature is 27.6o C. About 1515 mm precipitation falls annually. December is the driest whereas July is the wettest month here.
Cuttack has an agriculture based economy. The common crops cultivated in the region are rice, jute, mesta, pulses, oil seeds, coconut, turmeric, and sugarcane. The district ranks 2nd in the entire state in the production of Jute. Engineering industry in the district is assumed to be the veins of Cuttack’s industrial economy.

Major localities in the city are Odiya Bazaar, Poparada, Netaji Nagar, Ranihat, Tulsi Pur Sutahat, Biribati, Banara, Link Road, Jagatpur, Gopalpur and Badambadi.
Cuttack Junction is one of the busiest railway stations of Odisha, connecting the city with almost all major destinations of east India. Bus terminal is located at Badambadi from where hundreds of buses ply to various cities.
