Dhanbad-The Black Diamond City

Dhanbad is a major town in the state of Ranchi. It is known as the ‘Coal Capital of India’. Dhanbad is one of the 100 fastest growing cities of the world. Mineral Area Development Authority looks after the development of the city.

Dhanbad was earlier known as ‘Dhanbaid’ which means the paddy land. On 24th of October 1956, Dhanbad was constituted and declared a district. Formerly, the city was in Manbhum district of undivided Bihar. It came under Jharkhand on 15th November 2000.

The exact cartographic coordinates of Dhanbad are 24.4o North latitude and 86.5oEast longitude. The average elevation is 745 feet (227 meters). The district shares its boundaries with Giridih and Dumka in the North, West Bengal in the south and eastern part and Bokaro in the west.

Dhanbad experiences tropical wet and dry climate. The average annual temperature is 31.3o Celsius. Average annual precipitation is 1368 mm. July and August receive maximum rainfall.

Dhanbad is a coal mining city and one of the busiest commercial centers in eastern India. It is the second largest city and urban agglomeration in Jharkhand after Jamshedpur. The district has more than 100 coal mines that produce about 28 million tonnes of coal annually. A number of coal washeries are also present here. The Panchet and Maithan region have hydro power plants. ONGC is using Coal bedded methane (CBM) for power generation at some of the coal mines.

Major tourist attractions in the city are Maithan Lake, Deer Park, Bhatinda Falls, Panchet Dam, Kalyaneshwari Temple, Bhuphor Temple, Panra, Topchanchi Lake, Birsa Munda Park and Dhanbad Bird Sanctuary.
