An Introduction to the City
Kozhikode also known as Calicut has been ranked as the 2nd best city to live in the country. The history of the city as an administration begins in January 1957 when the states of Indian union were reorganized on the basis of linguistic in November 1956. However the Malabar district was found to be too unwieldy for administrative purposes and consequently, the government of the state ordered the formation of 3 districts. On 1st January 1956, Kozhikode came into existence consisting of 5 talukas- Koyilandy, Kozhikode, Vadakara, Tirur, and Ernad. The district now consists of 1 revenue division, 3 talukas, 12 blocks, 77 panchayats, and 117 villages.
Geographical Location of Kozhikode
Kozhikode is located at a very low elevation of 29 feet (9 meters), all the way along the western coast. The geographical coordinates of the city is 11.25o north latitude and 75.77o east longitude. The city is just 255 miles (410 kilometers) north to Thiruvananthapuram. The Sahyadri Mountains is to the east of the city and Lakshadweep Sea is to the left. Korapuzha river is 40 kilometers long and runs through the city.

Kozhikode experiences tropical monsoon climate. The average rainfall is 3266 mm. The main months of South-West monsoons are from June to September whereas October and November is the month of North-East monsoon. The weather gets clement from December until the end of February with crispy air and clear skies. March, April, and May remains hottest. Some monsoon shower hits the city in April.
