Mumbai is a collection of seven islands which are Bombay Island, Parel, Mazagaon, Mahim, Colaba, Worli, and Old Woman's island. In the third century, the islands of Mumbai were part of the Mauryan Empire under Ashoka the Great. It was in the year 1534 when the growing threat from the expanding Mughal Empire, that made the sultan of Gujarat sign the treaty of Bassein with the Portuguese Empire. The territories extended by the sultan to the Portuguese were surrendered by the Portuguese rulers to the Mughal emperor in 1535.
Meanwhile, Portuguese were granted permission to trade and establish churches in the region. On May 1661, English made the move by marrying Portuguese princess Catherine to the Charles II of England thus bringing the English empire in control of the region. According to the royal charter of March 1688, the East India Company leased these islands from English empire to conduct trade in the region.
Getting alarmed by the sudden rise of the population of the English in the region Yakut Khan, a general of the Mughal Empire attacked the islands in 1672. By 1687 East India Company shifted its headquarters from Surat to Bombay and formed the Bombay presidency. Seven islands of Bombay till 1737 were controlled by Marathas under Peshwa Baji Rao who expelled Portuguese from the region and eventually from India. A series of wars were fought between Maratha and British from 1774 to 1782 to control the city.
Heavy engineering projects were started in Bombay after 1782 which were dedicated at amalgamating the seven islands into a single city. After the defeat of Baji Rao, English gained control of entire Deccan and Gujarat region including Mumbai.
The importance of the Bombay increased due to the opening of the Suez Canal, making it a major trade port along the Arabian Sea. Mumbai was the center of Indian independence movement including the Royal Indian Navy Mutiny and Quit India Movement.
