History of Mysuru
The name Mysuru is derived from the word “Mahishasurana Ooru” which means the place of Mahishasur in Kannada. The city has been associated with the mythological story found in ‘Devi Bhagavatha’. According to a tale written in Devi Purana, Demon King Mahishasur Mysuru ruled over Mysuru. He was a monster with the buffalo head. He was killed by Devi Chamundeshwari (an incarnation of Goddess Parvathi) at Chamundi hill near Mysuru. Hence, the city and hill have the names Mysuru and Chamundi Hill respectively. It is said that Goddess stayed on the top of the hill after killing Mahishasur. People celebrate Dasara in the honour of Chamundeshwari Devi.
The city of Mysuru served as the capital of Mysuru Kingdom from 1399 until 1947.

Mysuru is located at 12.30°N latitude and 76.65°E longitude. The average altitude of the city is 770 meters above mean sea level. Mysuru, with the total area of 128.42 kilometers square is located between Kaveri River that flows through the north and Kabini River that flows to the south.

Mysuru has a semi-arid climate. March to June is summer and monsoon arrives here in July. Winter starts from December and remains till mid-February.
