Glorious history of the city
Pune was the capital of the Maratha Empire under Shivaji. During the reign of the Mughal emperor, Pune’s authority to govern was tossed several times between Marathas and Mughal starting from 1660 till 1705. Under the British, the city was called Poona, and the Poona municipality came into existence in 1858. Adding to this, in 1858, the great India peninsular railway also reached Pune under British raj. Pune was also an active center for the struggle for India’s independence as many freedom fighters came from this city, to name a few, Pandita Ramabai, Tarabai Shinde, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. The father of India, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was also jailed in the city’s Yerwada jail from 1942 to 1944.

Pune is one of the major urban centers in Maharashtra. Pune is situated on Deccan Plateau on the banks of river Mutha. Pune is situated 560 meters above sea level. It is situated on the boundaries of the Western Ghats near the Sahyadri Mountains. Vetal hill is the highest in Pune that towers up to 800 meters above the sea level.
