Visakhapatnam is the largest city in Andhra Pradesh and is often referred to as Vizag. French were defeated and East India Company made the city a significant port on the east coast of India. After India’s Independence in 1947, it became part of Andhra Pradesh. During 1971 Indo-Pak war, Indian navy posted at the Visakhapatnam port destroyed many Pakistani ships and contributed to the victory of India and liberation of Bangladesh.

Geographical Location

Vishakhapatnam lies between the Bay of Bengal in the east and the Eastern Ghats to the west. It occupies an area of 11,161 km2. The landscape of the city includes coastline, hills and plains.


Typically Visakhapatnam weather has hot summers and pleasing winters with heavy monsoons starting from June till September. Summers from March till May are tyrannical with temperature reaching 45°C or above.

The railway station of the city was formerly called Waltair railway station. In 1987, Mr. D.V. Subbarao, mayor of the city at the time, changed its name to Visakhapatnam railway station. East Coast Railway of Indian Railways administers the Visakhapatnam railway station. The station is located on the Chennai Central-Howrah Station route.


The city is connected by NH5, a major highway which is also an integral part of the Golden Quadrilateral connecting Chennai and Kolkata. Vizag has an incredible network of roads. State-owned APSRTC runs buses to various nearby places.

DMRC has asked to survey and prepare a project report for Vizag Metro Rail and also to overlook the project. The first phase of the Vizag Metro Rail is estimated to be complete by December 2018 with the help of Japan International Cooperation Agency providing the project with financial support.
