Visakhapatnam is the largest city in Andhra Pradesh and is often referred to as Vizag. It is famously called Goa of the east because of the beautiful landscape the city has along with beaches and hills. It is also known as the financial capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh. Visakhapatnam is the 9th most populous city in India and the 14th largest city. The city is part of the smart cities mission and also hosts the east naval command of Indian Navy. The economy of the city is mainly contributed by sectors that include heavy industries, information technology, tourism, fishing and industrial minerals.
Visakhapatnam was ruled by the Andhra kings from 10th to 16th century. After the defeat of Prabhakar, the last eastern Ganga King of Odisha, Mughals won the region of Visakhapatnam which was later passed on to the Nizams. In the 18th century, European powers including British and French fought many battles to gain hold over the strategically important region. French were defeated and East India Company made the city a significant port on the east coast of India. After India’s Independence in 1947, it became part of Andhra Pradesh. During 1971 Indo-Pak war, Indian navy posted at the Visakhapatnam port destroyed many Pakistani ships and contributed to the victory of India and liberation of Bangladesh.
Vishakhapatnam lies between the Bay of Bengal in the east and the Eastern Ghats to the west. It occupies an area of 11,161 km2. The landscape of the city includes coastline, hills and plains.
Typically Visakhapatnam weather has hot summers and pleasing winters with heavy monsoons starting from June till September. Summers from March till May are tyrannical with temperature reaching 45°C or above.

The railway station of the city was formerly called Waltair railway station. In 1987, Mr. D.V. Subbarao, mayor of the city at the time, changed its name to Visakhapatnam railway station. The city serves as the gateway via sea for Andhra Pradesh. It has one of the country's largest ports and the oldest shipyard. Vizag port is the busiest ports in India. Vizag Seaport has two berths in the inner harbor. The first birth is berth EQ-8 which is fully mechanized and the second berth EQ-9 berth is not mechanized. The Gangavaram Port in the city is India's deepest seaport.
DMRC has asked to survey and prepare a project report for Vizag Metro Rail and also to overlook the project. The first phase of the Vizag Metro Rail is estimated to be complete by December 2018 with the help of Japan International Cooperation Agency providing the project with financial support.
