The city was founded by Ram Das, the 4th Guru in 1577. He ordered the excavation of the holy Sarovar “Amrit Saras” which means Pool of Nectar. The name of the city is derived from the Sarovar. The temple was erected in the center of the pool by Guru Arjan Singhji, the 5th Guru of Sikhs. During the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the temple was decorated with gold foil, and since the temple has been popularly known as ‘The Golden Temple’. Amritsar became the city of Sikh faith. In 1849, the city was annexed to British India.
