Udaipur is a beautiful city in the state of Rajasthan. It was the capital of the former princely state of Mewar. The city is also referred to as the Venice of the East. Udaipur was founded by Maharaja Udai Singh II in 1553. Mughal emperor Akbar captured the fort of Chittorgarh in 1568 and Maharaja Udai Singh II moved his capital to his residential site that became the city of Udaipur. After Mughals, Sisodia, Ranas, and Maharanas ruled over the city , in 1818, it became the princely state of British India.

The city is situated in north-eastern part of Udaipur district. It is located almost in the middle of the stretch of Mumbai Delhi National Highway.
Udaipur has a tropical and sultry type of climate. In summers, the scorching sun makes it hot. Winters are pleasant in the region. Monsoons arrive in July heralded by thunderstorms and dust. The average annual rainfall is 637 mm. The scanty amount of rainfall makes the city more humid.
Udaipur’s economy is rather diversified with significant contributions from trade & commerce, tourism and industrial sector. It is also known for manufacturing beautiful handicraft items which are exported. Besides, the city houses a number of big and small industries including metals, minerals, marbles, gems and jewelry industries.
Places of tourist interest in the city are City Palace, Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar Lake, Monsoon Palace, Jagdish Temple, Jag Mandir, Saheliyo Ki Baari, Shilp Gram, Gulab Bagh, Moti Magri, Sajjangarh Biological Park, Bagore Ki Haveli, Gangaur Ghat, Karni Mata Temple and Udaipur Solar Observatory.
Major localities in the city are Hiran Magri, Brahmapuri, Pahada, Lakadwas, Iswal, Umarda, Gudli, Chitrakoot Nagar, Shavri Colony, Ashok Nagar, Eklingpura, Bari and Bhinder.
Maharana Pratap Airport or Dabok Airport is a commercial domestic airport in the city. The nearest railway head is Udaipur Junction. It has very good connectivity with other states in India. You can easily get regular buses for neighboring cities and other destinations from Udaipur city bus depot.
